Recognizing the rapid advancements in research and development within aquaculture and ocean studies, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) took a forward-thinking step by proposing the establishment of Centres of Excellence in the 12th Five-Year Plan. This strategic initiative, aimed at addressing the thrust areas of these critical domains, was duly approved by the Government of Kerala.
These Centres of Excellence serve as specialized hubs for cutting-edge research, innovation, and capacity-building in fisheries, aquaculture, and marine science. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and integrating global best practices, these centers aim to enhance academic rigor and practical applications, making KUFOS a leader in the blue economy and sustainable development.
The formal inauguration of the Centres of Excellence took place on the 12th of September 2017 at the university’s main campus in Kochi. The event was graced by the presence of Smt. J. Her inaugural address highlighted the critical role of such institutions in advancing Kerala’s status as a global hub for fisheries and ocean studies, while also empowering local communities and industries dependent on aquatic resources.
The establishment of these Centers reflects KUFOS’s commitment to addressing contemporary challenges and leveraging opportunities in fisheries and marine sciences.
