The erstwhile College of Fisheries of Kerala Agriculture University was got elevated as Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean studies during 2011. The extension activities under the leadership of Director of Extension are mainly undertaken by the Department of Aquaculture and Department of Management Studies availing services of qualified extension personnel (with MFSc, Fisheries extension). A large number of developmental activities directly addressing the day today issues of the fisherfolk are organized by the extension wing of the university. There are two units actively involved in this endeavor under the Fisheries University, viz Faculty of Fisheries Panangad and Fisheries Station, Puduveype .Both these units are positively intervening in the welfare programmes of the fisherfolk and fish farming communities. The former centre looks into the fresh water farming scenario while the latter focuses on the problems of brackish water and marine fish farmers. General issues related to the fisheries sector are handled by the headquarters.
A regional station at Thiruvallam is also being established. On its proper functioning, extension services will be rendered available from there also catering to the needs of fisher folk and fish farmers.
Students are regularly sent for surveys as part of their curriculum and the problems are identified by analyzing the data collected. Elaborate discussions with the people under investigation will reveal most of their problems effectively. Fisherfolks day is organized every year during which farmers express their felt needs which will also provide input for the future programmes. Most of the faculty members regularly participate in farmer level training programmes which also help to get the right feedback from the stakeholders.
The mandates of the teachers in the University are teaching, research and extension. So almost all faculty members take keen interest to get themselves involved in the extension programmes and get due weightage for career advancement
