“Consistent and continued research related to fisheries is highly necessary towards evolving knowhows and breakthroughs ”.
KUFOS being a novel entity, fisheries research is planned to be undertaken in a systematic manner taking into account the needs and requirements of the prevailing scenario in the State.
The potential of inland water bodies of the State comprising rivers, reservoirs, lakes, ponds and other wetland ecosystems is not being properly tapped. Although traditional paddy cum shrimp culture practices has been in vogue for ages, aquaculture practices in Kerala, are still somewhat a domestic activity which needs to develop into an industry. Therefore , KUFOS is focussing on developing inland aquaculture by brood stock development in captivity, induced breeding and seed production of cultivable species of shellfishes and finfishes and grow-out farming practices. The fisheries sector demands sustainable aquaculture systems, responsible fisheries, post-harvest management and research to augment productivity, efficiency, equity, sustainability and trade
Ocean studies in the University will be mainly focussing on oceanography research by developing knowledge on physical, chemical, biological, geological, geophysical, engineering and pollution aspects of the coastal and offshore waters off Kerala. Research activities are directed to excel in technological capabilities for ocean applications and to develop and demonstrate world class technologies for sustainable utilization of ocean resources as well.
