Dr. Rejish Kumar V J

About

Dr. Rejish Kumar VJ completed his post-graduation in Marine Biology from Cochin University of Science and Technology. Thereafter, he moved to National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health, Cochin University of Science and Technology, where he worked on various aspects of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and marine biotechnology for his PhD degree. His doctoral research paved the way for the optimization and validation of two patented nitrifying bioreactors and their commercialization. After PhD, he joined Yeungnam University (South Korea) for postdoctoral research on the development of various probiotic bacteria for animal and human application. Upon awarding the JSPS fellowship he moved to Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences (Japan); where he worked on chemical and microbial analyses of the simulated hydrothermal vent system and the development of a mathematical model. He participated in Southern Mariana Trough cruise for collecting hydrothermal vent samples, conducted by Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan. After successful completion of the project he joined the Laboratory of Extremophiles, Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Science as a visiting scientist. Later completing three years of research life in Japan, he moved to National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), CSIR, Goa as Principal Investigator under SERB, DST Young Scientist Scheme. In 2015 he joined Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies as Assistant Professor in the Department of Aquaculture. His areas of research include nitrification, probiotics, aquatic microbiology and fish genomics/transcriptomics. Currently, his team is working on various aspects of microbial and biotechnological interventions in aquaculture for sustainable production.
