Dr Binu Varghese

About

Binu Varghese did his master’s degree in fisheries science (Mariculture) and doctoral degree in Fisheries Science (Mariculture) from Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI)/ Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE). After completing the doctoral research on marine ornamental fish nutrition in 2005, involved in various ornamental fisheries development activities in Kerala and Lakshadweep islands. He has more than fifteen years of experience in research, teaching, extension, and administration in state, central and private sector institutions at various capacities. During his eight years tenure with the Ornamental Fish Division of Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA), he facilitated the establishment of more than 200 scientific fish breeding units in Kerala and other parts of the country. He was instrumental in establishing the Ornamental Fish Training Centre, Ornamental Fish Marketing Society, Farmers and breeders associations in Kerala. He has organized various training, awareness, and orientation programs for the fish farmers, exporters, officials, students, bankers, and other stakeholders funded by international agencies like UNCTAD, MSC, and national agencies. He was Local Competent Authority to certify live ornamental fish export, facilitated international consultancy programs, and monitored funded research projects. Working as Assistant Professor (Fish Breeding) at KUFOS from 2015, and engaged in research and development activities in breeding and seed production of Pearlspot and indigenous ornamental fishes. Other research areas of interest are the live feeds and various aquaculture systems. He is presently teaching and guiding undergraduates, postgraduate and doctoral students. In-charge of hatcheries and Public Aquarium operated by University. Served in the Academic Council; Programme Coordinator, National Service Scheme, and Earn While You Learn program. Act as University Nodal officer for Marine Stewardship Council, UK programs, and Young Innovators Programme. Past several years serves as a proposal reviewer for aquaculture projects of NOAA/NMFS, Department of Commerce, United States, and fisheries projects of KSCSTE.
