Centre for Bioactive Substances from Marine Organisms

The Centre for Bioactive Substances from Marine Organisms, established by Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) with the support of the Kerala State Plan Fund, is dedicated to advancing natural drug discovery through marine resources. The center focuses on the isolation, identification, and structural determination of bioactive small molecules derived from various marine sources, including seaweeds, yeasts, sponges, and associated microbes.
In addition to identifying these molecules, the center emphasizes studying their mechanisms of action, paving the way for the development of innovative therapeutic solutions and commercially viable products. By leveraging the vast biodiversity of marine organisms, the center aims to address pressing challenges in healthcare, biotechnology, and sustainable resource utilization, contributing significantly to both scientific progress and societal well-being.
This initiative aligns with KUFOS’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovation, positioning the university as a leader in marine bioprospecting and the development of high-value products from marine resources.
