Fisherfolk engaged in fishing activities both in the inland sector as well as in the marine fisheries sector require timely information while carrying out their fishing operations. Similarly, innovations in the aquaculture and allied sectors have to be transferred in an effective manner to the target group. The dwindling catches in the marine sector indicate the necessity of creating awareness about responsible fisheries among the fisherfolk to avoid over-exploitation and conserve the fishery resources for the future generation . In the above scenario, establishment of a Fisheries Technical Portal and Knowledge Centre at KUFOS acts as a single window in disseminating all the relevant information and technologies in the field of fisheries to the fisherfolk and fish farmers. It is transferred through publications, conducting awareness and training programmes etc.

Karimeen, Etroplus suratensis, is well known for its importance in inland fishery and contribution to tourism sector. The unique culinary dishes are well accepted and in demand throughtout the year. However, the karimeen fishery from the backwaters are in the verge of collapse due to environment degradation and destructive fishing practices. Enhancement of production can only be achieved by conserving the resources and increasing the aquaculture production. A viable mass seed production and nursery rearing technology is now developed at KUFOS. So through proper technological intervention the status of Karimeen aquaculture can be revived. This will generate viable employment opportunities at various strata like seed production, nursery rearing for production of fingerlings, cage/pond culture, value addition, and marketing. Kumbalam Panchayath is selected as it is surrounded by Vembanad Lake with suitable water and land area; and it is the village where the KUFOS head quarters and associated facilities were available for tactical support. The local conservation efforts can be properly monitored as University has access to the Vembanad Lake and will be done with community participation.

Introduction of mechanization in the marine fisheries sector revolutionized the fish production scenario of the Kerala State and helped in increasing the fish production of the State, development of allied industries, leading to more employment opportunities to the fisherfolk and contributed significantly to their socio economic development. But these developments adversely affected the traditional fisherfolk of which the status of the women was worst compared to men. Industry became capital intensive and poor womenfolk were displaced from many of their traditional engagements . Drudgery, occupational health hazards, lack of land ownership and wage differentials, etc are some of the crucial gender issues in this sector. In the present scenario the empowerment of women both in the marine and inland fisheries sector is inevitable so as to ensure gender equality is all aspects of life which could be achieved only by addressing the gender issues in the field level and formulating adequate plans and measurers to overcome such issues. Establishing a Center for Studies on Gender Concerns in Fisheries and Entrepreneurship Development at KUFOS will help in achieving the above objects to a great extent.
